At Stake

This is an update about my University placement in the U.S.

I received an email from the Fulbright office this morning after I sent them many emails asking about my condition.. Well, the news are bad and not so optimistic!

Five universities have rejected me so far, and there's still one last university whom they are waiting a final asnwer from. If their answer will be the same as the previous ones, then I will have no place in the Fulbright anymore, and will not participate in the program.. and will not go to the U.S.

I'm still waiting for that final answer from the last university. However, the IEE Institution itself is not optimistic about it.

I'm devastated here and can't stop crying.

In my country there was such a case too. Three universities rejected one of the 2006 Fulbright Cambodian grantees. However, the last one accepted him but i guess with certain conditions. He departed last month for an intensive program before his academic program. If you are a grantee, IIE will not let this happen. Just from my opinion. I could never be sure about my going to the US till today. I am leaving the coming Monday. Keep having a hope. Ask IIE the reasons why they rejected you. Then some compromise can be made to earn acceptance.

I wish I could do something to help you feel better. I know how important the Fulbright program is to you, so I can understand the grief you are feeling now. However, you still have a chance. Please don't give up! All my best wishes are for you!

If Ohio State or Ohio University are not on the reject list, let me know.
Maybe even Indiana University.

Oh, by the way, let me know, and I can tell you the secret way I got into the graduate school at Indiana University, after being told I didn't have all the pre-requistes for a master's degree in history or literature. It might work or you, and IU is a great school.

This is really awful - I know how much this whole thing means to you. It's really awful when they get your hopes up, only to see the rug get yanked out from under you like this. I'm sure it's also irritating, when you think about all the work you did to get qualified for the program, and the fact you spent the last year idle waiting to hear something.

If you are really looking to go abroad, you may also want to consider working for a couple of years and then going back to school after. If you have a bachelor's degree, you qualify for the H1-B program (which would allow you to come to the US to work for a few years). All you would need to do is find an employer who is willing to sponsor you.

Likewise, similar programs exist in other countries too (Britain, Canada, etc.).

Oh, I'm so sorry to hear this!

Why only 6 universities? Are those the only ones who have the proper program for your studies?

I hope that the last school will be good news!

Oh Morbido, I am sorry to hear of these five foolish universities who did not recognize a terrific person in their midst! Hopefully another university will have more sense.
Do you think your program of study proposal was too narrow? Would it be possible to change your program of study and reapply for Spring 2007 in something broader like "world history", "middle eastern studies", "Arabic" or something like that?
Have you asked the people if there is anything you can do to help them?
I hope your tears of sorrow become tears of joy soon.
Best Wishes,

morbid smile,
did the program basically allow you to apply to only these universities? if not, then maybe you should apply to a few more to increase your chances...that's how it works here in the states, students apply to many universities to insure they get into at least one.

hope it all works out for you habibtee...you obviously more than deserve it considering you are one of the fulbright winners.

Well, I am impressed by how quickly you got over your latest disappointment. That's the mark of a champion. And I did enjoy your ranting and yelling and crying and cursing about it. It's a sign that you're not content to be a loser. Losers just quietly give up. The credo of every successful person I've ever known has been "never, never give up". And don't let anyone or any disappointment take away a dream. If you do, you'll regret it for the rest of your life.
