Love at First Sight

Is there such a thing as love at first sight?
That's the question I used to ask
Until I laid eyes on you.
How is it possible to feel so much for a
stranger, a passerby?
Love has no limits, no color, no time.
That's when I realized I had fallen in love -
Love at first sight.

What do you think of love at first sight? Does it really exist or is it just a fantacy that we read in romantic tales where the two protagonists fall in love as soon as they catch each others' eyes? I have been asking myself this question for quite a long time> I heard many stories of this kind when I was at high school, and it was a real fun to hear and believe in such things. It happened to me once, actually. But no! I wasn't the one who fell in love with someone at first sight. It was him who did!

I was still at high school at that time, it was probably 1997. There used to be so many guys fooling around near my school and it happened that this guy saw me and started to get some info about me like most of the guys do here when they want to know something about a certain girl. But all his searches were in vain as I was new in the school and nobody even knew my name. I didn't know anything at first but he revealed it after about one year during the school's final exams. But how did he reveal it? No, he didn't have the courage to come and talk to me. He couldn't do it in front of school among the girls, and my house was in the same street where the school was so he couldn't follow me in order to talk either..

He found a girl whom he knew and asked her to send me a verbal message on his behalf expressing his "love"! I first did't believe it, I didn't even know that he existed by that time and I asked the girl to point him to me if he happened to be near the school...

Anyways, nothing of that love could work out cuz I was too young for love. I was only 13. He sent his Mother and sister after some years to ask for my hand but his request was rejected cuz I was still too young to be engaged.

I see that most of the love-at-first-sight stories happen during high school age. That's why some people don't believe in it. It could also happen during college life, but actually I don't know another story to tell here! :)

Now, remember the poll I had at my blog's sidebar? It said "What do you think of love at first sight?", and the answer choices where:

1. Reality.
2. Fantacy.
3. There is no such thing.
4. I don't know!

The poll got 60 votes when I deleted it, and the result was as in the image bellow..

30 people out of 60 say that love at first sight exists. I'm one of those people. I don't say this cuz of that teenagehood's story, but cuz I believe in it even if I haven't experienced it yet. It's true that you might love someone at first sight but then it turns out to be not a true love at all, but the same thing can happen when you know and love someone for a long period of time and then discover that there is no love in the first place! Anything can be possible in love; you can love someone you don't know ( like in the poem above ), or you can fall in love with a friend which happens quite often ( like Monica and Chandler in F.R.I.E.N.D.S. for example!), or you can simply meet someone for some time and then fall in love with him\her.

Why some people think it's a fantacy? Maybe because they haven't seen it in real life, or maybe because they think it's an irrational feeling.. or for any other reason. It's real because it happens in real life, because it's one of the ways to fall in love. You may say that it's a crazy way to fall in love like this, but let me tell you that love itself is crazy! It might be considered a fantacy because it suddenly transferes the person from the real world to another magical one by one look from the "beloved" and put him in a fairy-tales world where everything is real, possible and easy to reach.

You might ask if I'm in love wish someone! Well, I'm not in love with anyone yet, but with love itself.

Well, this is my concept about the matter and I hope to read your concepts and opinions as well. Love is a universal feeling which every living person go through at least once in a life time. I know you have wonderful stories to tell, so I'm waiting :) And there are readers who have never left a comment in the blog, PLEASE do it this time!

Yes, there is such a thing as love at first sight.

I was in a conference room at the company I worked for many years ago working with others on a project. In another conference room she was being interviewed for a job. When she walked out (the rooms have glass windows), she, for some reason, turned around and we caught each other in a very straight glance. I'll never forget that. She was nice and was hired. I remember thinking about that moment all night. It was a deja-vu moment for me.

My position at the time was an IT network specialist and programmer. I taught all new employees the nature of our company's network, but... I was also an expert in the field she was hired in. I'll not say which as someone reading this could possibly relate the two of us.

Our state, here in the USA, was having the first Lotto in it's history and people were lining up in droves to get tickets. I live in a very large city with many suburbs and went to one of the only Lotto grocery stores to buy my first ticket. Hundreds of people were in the line and, for some reason, someone about a hundred people ahead of me caught my attention (i could only see her backside). I remembered that. Turns out, the next day as I was introduced to her, she was the same person and she lived about 1.5 miles from me. In such a large city to live so close. We both lived 25 miles from work. This was very strange, so could it be... love at first sight?

She had just recently married, and I had just married 2 years before, so there were problems from the outset. But, we became so very close as friends. We would tell each other the most intimate moments of our lives. Anytime our company went, as a small group, to a location, we were together (we were together all the time). We went out to lunch each day. And, there were some in our company who had questioned our relationship. I considered her my "wife" at work. We were that close. When my phone would ring, I "always knew" when it was she who was calling. It was an amazing experience in my life, as well as hers.

To those who know, professionals are not allowed to deviate from the norm. The company (and our career) always comes first, so there was nothing we could do otherwise. Our careers were at stake every day.

I eventually left for a better position with another company. I think about her every day, so many years later.

We never called each other's bluff and were willing to call off our careers for each other. That's what I regret. I miss her company very much. So very much.

So, to answer your question, there definitely IS such a thing as "love at first sight".

Maddog,

Your story sounds too sad.

Morbido,

I have definately been attracted to someone at first sight. The chemistry was definately there. But love at first sight? Real love? For me I would have to say no I haven't experienced it. But I don't discount the possibility. Anything is possible.

The comments section is back to normal finally! I've been trying to write something here but it always disappeared..

Maddog, I loved your story alot that I kept thinking about it after I read it. Thanks for sharing! Such things happen alot when love at first sight comes but it can only be turned to a very close friendship cuz it can't be other than that for some reasons. That must be sad but at the same time it could be one of the greatest experiences a person can have.

Hey Lynnette! Yes, anything can be possible, and I think that it depends on the person himself wether he he believes in love at first sight in order to make it happen. There might be no love at first sight but someone who believes in it thinks that it is a real love.. or the opposite!

Well first i think the subjeect is interesting ,but hey i think i have a different perspective of the whole thing , i thing before answering the subject ,we should first find out what love really is ,coz i think i look to love not like most people do ,if love is that rush of blood in the heart when you see some one then i think love from first sight is so possible ,i mean every one must have felt it toward a male or a female,BUT i think the rush of blood is the beggining of love ,which could possible be nothing be a scratch from the whole thing ,coz love my dear friends ,is some thing much more profound then that feeling ,love is the highest degree of mental ,physical and soul interconnection that could happen between two people ,it is a feeling of a one week new born baby toward his mom ,life do not exist with out that other person ,some religions believe ,not our religion of course ,that when God created us ,he created a pair of every creature ,a male and a female ,could these two bodies meet ,it is eternal love and hapiness ,now if this is your perspective toward love then you should say that love from first sight do not exist ,it could be admiration ,or any thing you would name but not love the way i understand it ,cheers.

There is no such thing as "love" at first sight. But there is such a thing of "lust" at first sight if you are very attracted to them physically. How can you truly "love" someoene you don't even know?!! If there was such a thing then hot models would be marrying ugly guys they saw walking down the street! You have to really know someone well to begin to love them- not just what they look like..which is why I am still single :)

Morbido,

Have you ever seen the movie "The Notebook"? If you haven't, you really really have to. It's sad, but it is a beautiful love story.

Hey Morbido,

I don't think there's anything called "love" at first site. Attraction, yes, but love is something that takes some time to develop as you get to know the person.

I also think that many people have no idea what "love" really means - they think of "love" and "lust" as the same thing, when in fact they are very different.

Morbido - I made a post about your blog at Global Voices Online and mentioned the new design of your blog. I come back to day and its back to normal - what happened??

Hello everyone! The old layout is back!!!

Iraq craddle of civilization, Karina and Salam, welcome to the blog and thank you for leaving a comment :)

I have to say that I liked the description which Iraq craddle gave about love. But I was saying that this "rush of blood", as you named it, can turn to a big love with some people who believe in it.

Lt. Fishman, believe it or not, I know some people who fall in love with a person they don't know! But for me, it takes me a long time to admire a person, and a longer time to love. So I can say that I'm on the safe side! ;) But what I like about it is that it's imaginary which we can only read about in fairy tales where everything ends happily!

No, Lynnette, I haven't seen "The Notebook" yet :( But it's on my Must-Watch movies which I'm planning to watch. Everyone I know who watched it told me that they cried!

Karina, you have a nice blog. You are my first visitor from Philippines :) I'll link to your blog as well.

Mad Canuck, I don't think that "love" and "lust" are the same either. They are so different, but yes there are some people who think that they are the same. I think that all of this depends on the person's own perspective on things and aspects in life..

Salam, you've been wondering what is it with girls and pink? Let me tell you, I don't like pink! But I picked that template for the hat! :) I love hats so much! I think the reason why most of the girls like pink is Barbie! All Barbie's stuff are pink, and girls might be affected by that! :D

Cheers everyone!

The poll lasted for so long on your blog. Each time I see it I change my mind. And to tell you the truth I don't remember what did I vote for, was it reality or fantasy?

But what I'm sure of is the thing called "love from first sight" is not the real love. You may fall in love with the face or with the style but to fall in love with someone you need to know that person.
"The first sight" is just an approval to spend time with that person but to built a future you need time.

N-o-o-o-o such thang!
No, no, no.
Love takes work. Otherwise, why would Allah have to send many many prophets on earth to tell us how to treat each other?
Love requires work, commitment and many many efforts when we are sick or angry or have many difficulties in life.
I do, however, believe it's possible to get attracted to someone at first sight; but love, definitely not.

i didnt believe in love at first sight until 3 years. i passed a girl on a busy weekened club night she complimented me i said thanks and our eyes got locked, then she moved on and that night is a vague memory as i was very drrrunk. since then i have seen her on campus 2-3 times, when she sees me she keeps looking at me as if she has been longing to see me, i can almost read her eyes, i feel the same but we havent been in a setting that one of us could approach one other. but i have thought about her every day for the past 3 years, imagined a whole life with her. so if this is not love what is it?
